Festival named after Andrei Sakharov was first held in Nizhny Novgorod in 1992 on the initiative of the artistic and General Director of the Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic, honoured art worker of Russia, Honorary citizen of Nizhny Novgorod Olga Tomina and outstanding musician, one of the founders of the legendary Quartet. The idea was warmly supported by world-renowned artists, first and foremost, Mstislav Rostropovich, who founded the famous Nizhny Novgorod festival “Contemporary music” and participate in a new endeavor continuation of historical traditions. Welcome to the first festival sent Elena Bonner, Sviatoslav Richter, Alfred Schnittke, Vladimir Ashkenazy and many other outstanding compatriots.
Over the years the festival has established itself as the largest music forum not only Russian but also international scale: in 1999 he became one of the first local festivals as adopted by the European Festivals Association with UNESCO.
The history of the seven previous festivals – a firework performances of a whole constellation of outstanding, brilliant singers and famous bands from Russia, Austria, great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, USA, Canada, Israel, China, Mexico and other countries, it is the joy of meetings with the highest achievements of human genius and the discovery of new names and phenomena of contemporary art. The best Russian and foreign artists without any preconditions consent to participate in this celebration of the arts.

VIII festival of arts named after A. D. Sakharov promises to be yet another milestone in the cultural life of Nizhny Novgorod, but also throughout Russia. In scale, the number of premieres and new names he is perhaps superior to previous festivals. Within 16 days of the best concert halls, theaters, exhibition halls will be given to the festival – the Kremlin concert hall and small hall, Concert hall of the Moscow Conservatoire, drama and puppet theatres, halls of the art Museum in the Kremlin. 20 music programs and performances, involving about 350 artists from Russia, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, UK, Italy, Argentina, will present a wide panorama of different kinds of art, eras, styles. They will combine concerts of symphonic, chamber, choral, jazz music, art, ancient and modern, literature, dance, theatrical performances, exhibitions of paintings and graphics.
By tradition established in recent years, special days of the festival dedicated to the culture and art of individual European countries – the Netherlands, France, UK, Germany. Particularly powerful and diverse this time the art of modern Holland, which brings to the festival the best what is rightfully proud of the country. “The days of culture of the Netherlands” – a kind of “festival within a festival” – will give us a meeting with the artists of ancient, classical and modern music, artists workshop recognized modern European modern dance-ballet “Introdans” the world value – writer and musicologist E. Shenberger, author of brilliant books about Stravinsky “Watch Apollo”. Simultaneously with the concerts of masters of arts from the Netherlands will conduct lectures, master classes, creative meetings. In turn, young musicians from Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod learn to perform at the festival, the scores of Dutch composers, and Nizhny Novgorod state art Museum to mark the opening of the festival have prepared the exhibition “the Art of the Netherlands” their funds NGHM, which is a genuine interest of our guests.
